I was sitting sprawled on my deckchair outside my unit as had become my custom at this time of day ever since I took on the formidable duties of a retired gentleman.

BEFORE that momentous day on the balcony, when I first met Squeaky, I never took much interest in birds, (the feathered variety I mean) I’ve never ever been what you would call a ‘bird lover’ apart from the normal love and respect for life in general. After all, every creature has as much right to be here as us humans.

SQUEAKY returned to my balcony railing on regular occasions after our first meeting to reappraise this large creature that he had seen on his first visit. I wondered if he knew what I was, but then on second thoughts, he probably knew more about me than I did about him.

5: The Menu Fare

BRILLIANT shards of crystal sunshine penetrated the cracks between the vertical blinds covering the unit’s front entrance stabbing slivers of light into the inner darkness. Wiping the night’s dreams from my eyes I pulled blearily on the blind’s opening cord allowing the full force of the new day to wash unabated into the living room.
