SUMMER’S sultry reign over The Great Southern Land had completed its cycle for the year – Sol’s golden tour of duty had successfully warmed the soil and the oceans and was set for lighter duties until next year.
BRILLIANT sunshine roused me from my foggy daydreams as Sol took a sneaky peek at the world below from behind a cottonwool autumn cloud. I was sitting sprawled on my deckchair outside my unit as had become my custom at this time of day ever since I took on the formidable duties of a retired gentleman.
BEFORE that momentous day on the balcony, when I first met Squeaky, I never took much interest in birds, (the feathered variety I mean) I’ve never ever been what you would call a ‘bird lover’ apart from the normal love and respect for life in general. After all, every creature has as much right to be here as us humans.
SQUEAKY returned to my balcony railing on regular occasions after our first meeting to reappraise this large creature that he had seen on his first visit. I wondered if he knew what I was, but then on second thoughts, he probably knew more about me than I did about him.
BRILLIANT shards of crystal sunshine penetrated the cracks between the vertical blinds covering the unit’s front entrance stabbing slivers of light into the inner darkness. Wiping the night’s dreams from my eyes I pulled blearily on the blind’s opening cord allowing the full force of the new day to wash unabated into the living room.
