An Inside Story 49
WHAT WE WEAR, HOW WE DIE…
THE fashion industry is included amongst ‘the culprits that control our lives’ where the self proclaimed fashionable few decide for the rest of us what to wear and what not to wear… what is in fashion today and what is no-wear tomorrow. If we are gullible enough and follow their ever changing fashion whims, then we will be forever changing our wardrobe.
Another big problem we have today is with the euthanasia debate. The problem is not in actually deciding to take our own life if we feel the quality has declined into too much pain and suffering, but without consideration of our feelings, others in society, pompously believing that they know better that we do, unsympathetically impose blanket laws against it.
It’s our life after all. We are the ones suffering the pain, not them. But we are forced to choose between years of distress or breaking society’s law. We can’t be penalized of course if we do end our life, but the authorities are very sneaky and threaten to penalize our loved ones and helpers if we do. The threat of imprisonment for anyone who assists us prevents us from making that decision.
The imagined threat of legalizing euthanasia is that some people will try and take the easy way out when considering suicide – and that may occur, but this cannot be stopped or controlled by imposing an all encompassing law against euthanasia. Rather, it is better mediated with common sense, awareness and intelligent consultation.
There is nothing inherently wrong with receiving advice from others if we then have the option to take it in and best decide for ourselves how we conduct our life – without penalty, but when it becomes a law, when others decide for us while we have little or no say in the matter, then we have a problem.
If we don’t conform, we, or our loved ones in the case of euthanasia, are penalized and/or imprisoned, which as we know, certainly isn’t the solution – and yet, this is what we repeatedly do.
To leave the conduct of our lives up to the determination of others, who believe they know better than we do, is something we must all outgrow…
