An Inside Story 43

OFF WITH THEIR CLOTHES…

The Naked Taboo

RECEPTIONISTS and attending nurses were all dressed in smart blue blouse, sleek black slacks, worn over shiny patent leather shoes. They marched about the doctor’s surgery like shepherds conscientiously tending their flock of ailing sheep. Their cheerful faces were enhanced by a light and delicate dusting of makeup and a neat smear of lipstick accentuated their smiling lips.

An invisible trail of sweet smelling perfume wafted from their delicate bodies as they authoritatively strutted around the surgery. The reception cum waiting room was like most other doctor’s surgery’s, arranged so the nurses could keep a motherly eye on the waiting patients, but it also allowed the patients to watch the hustle and bustle of the competent female staff as they went busily about their duties.

I was never one for going to the doctor, but I was impelled to go for a check up on a lung problem. Back when I was young, like a lot of kids my age, I took up smoking. It was thirty years before I had the sense and will power to give up the fags, but unbeknownst to me, the damage had been done.

That was over twenty years ago and I had naively believed I had been lucky enough to have escaped any long term damage, but I was wrong. In the last five years or so, my love of sucking on those addictive cancer sticks has come back to bite me – but that’s beside the point – as I was waiting for the doc I had time to really look at the people and the situation that surrounded me.

I got to thinking, what if we were all naked? Not in a lewd sense, but realistically. Would the staff still go about what they were doing with the same airs and graces, dignity and confidence, or would their whole demeanour change?

Of course this could never happen – and if it did we all know what society’s laws would do about it don’t we? The place would be swarming with cops, while official looking officials pranced about tut tutting to each other like they were important and knew what they were doing. Yes our society certainly does rule…
